WWE SummerSlam Results (8/23/20) – Roman Reigns Returns

Welcome to our live coverage of WWE SummerSlam. Here, you will find complete results from the 2020 edition of WWE’s biggest pay-per-view of the summer. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the show will take place without fans from the WWE ThunderDome at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

WWE SummerSlam Results: Sunday, August 23, 2020

WWE United States Championship Match
– Apollo Crews vs. MVP

The start:

MVP immediately locks in a submission hold but Crews is able to get out

Mid-match notes:

Apollo Crews counters with some hip tosses. He is in control early on but MVP eventually tosses him off the top rope to the outside.

MVP bounces Crews’ head off the announce table and rolls him back inside of the ring. Right hands from MVP on Crews. Crews kicks MVP in the back of the neck and goes to the top rope. MVP knocked him off and followed with right hands.

MVP suplexes Crews off the ropes. Both ended up on the outside. They get back in at the count of seven. Both recover and Crews splashes MVP twice in the corner and follows with a spine buster and standing moonsault. He gets a two count.

The finish:

MVP goes for the Playmaker but Crews counters with his Spin-Out Powerbomb and follows it with the pin.

Winner & STILL WWE United States Champion, Apollo Crews

After the match, Shelton Benjamin and Bobby Lashley ran out. Crews retreated down the ramp and screamed, “It’s still mine!”

WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship Match
– Bayley (c) w/Sasha Banks vs. Asuka

The start:

The bell rings and the women lock up. Asuka gains the early advantage by being very physical. She lands a dropkick to the Champion’s mid-section.

Match-match notes:

Asuka attempted a belly-to-back but then locked in a submission hold. Bayley got to the ropes. Asuka off the ropes and hit a baseball slide to Bayley’s knee. She knocked her off the apron right in front of the announce table. Sasha Banks looks on in horror. Asuka off the steps into a DDT on Bayley in an awesome spot.

Back in the ring, Asuka gets a near-fall. Bayley recovers enough to where she can counter. Bayley goes off the ropes and catches Asuka in a stunner/cutter type move across the middle ropes. Bayley gets a two count. Bayley stomps away on the challenger. Snap suplex from Bayley onto Asuka and into a two count.

Side headlock from Bayley on Asuka. The referee checks for submission. The fight gets back to a vertical base. Bayley goes to work on Asuka but she uses her kicks to get back into it. But Bayley hits a Bayley-to-belly suplex and gets a two count. Corey Graves questions if this has shattered Asuka’s confidence. Asuka counters with high elbow and rolls Bayley up for a two count.

Big kick from Asuka to Bayley’s face. Both women are down in the center of the ring. Running hip attack and a release suplex from Asuka onto Bayley. Just as it seems one woman has done enough, the other builds a counter. They exchange forearms on the apron of the ring. Asuka is knocked off the apron to the outside, Bayley brings her back into the ring.

Bayley hits a chop block to the back of Asuka’s knee and gets a two count. Bayley locks in a submission hold on the Challenger. She’s in trouble as WWE turns the mics up of the virtual fans. Asuka breaks out and counters with double knees! Bayley melts and Asuka gets a two count. Asuka gets on the ropes and Bayley tries to stop her. Asuka goes off but Bayley counters with a knee submission.

The referee checks for submission. The hold is broken and Bayley goes to the top rope. She goes for an elbow but she lands right into an armbar from the Challenger. Banks tries to get involved but Asuka kicks her in the face, forcing the armbar to break. Auksa hits a spinning back fist on Bayley on the outside. Asuka gets Bayley back in but kicks Banks. This allows Bayley to get a two count.

The finish:

Asuka hits a kick in the midsection of Bayley. Banks on the apron, gets hit off as Asuka charges, which allows Bayley the opportunity to roll Asuka up for the three count.

Winner and STILL WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, Bayley

After the match, Banks wears Asuka out to weaken her for their match later tonight.

Backstage, Dominik tells Rey Mysterio this is his fight and he needs him to promise him. Rey cuts him off and says he knows what he is going to ask and he can’t promise that. Dominik asks Rey not to get involved in his fight against Seth Rollins. Rey said as hard as this is, I give you my word. They embrace.

The Raw announce team is out and they introduce a video package for Retribution.

Kevin Owens comes out. He calls the virtual fans “all his friends” as he’ll be on announce for this one.

WWE Raw Tag Team Championship Match
– The Street Profits (c) vs. Andrade & Angel Garza w/Zelina Vega

During the entrance of The Street Profits, solo cups blast throughout the ramp. When they get in the ring, the same thing happens.

The start:

Montez Ford starts the match with Andrade. Ford is all business starting out, as he hits a flying clothesline to take his opponent down. He follows it with a hurracarrana with his opponent on the top rope.

Mid-match notes:

Ford makes a tag and does a suicide flip onto the outside onto the challengers. They catch him. The legal men are Ford and Angel Garza. Garza baseball slid into Ford to the outside. Back inside, Garza a two count. He then locked in a submission hold. Kevin Owens yells at Zelina to “do better.”

Montez Ford is on the ropes as Garza hits him off. Andrade tags himself in and locks in an armbar on Montez. He sits on his opponent but the virtual crowd makes some noise to help him break it. Garza is tagged in and runs at Ford in the corner. Cover for two. He sets Ford up on the ropes and taunts the fans. Tree of woe position for Ford, as Garza is tagged back in. A double team maneuver and another near fall.

Angelo Dawkins has had limited involvement in the match so far. Garza and Andrade continue to exchange tags. It’s Andrade now and Ford counters with a kick and a tag. Dawkins is in the match. Spinning elbow off the ropes from Dawkins. Angelo was on a role but Andrade hit a huge back elbow. Angelo speared him in a counter.

Ford is tagged back in and hits a huge spot off the ropes onto Garza but Garza gets the cover and uses the ropes for the illegal cover. The referee saw him. Zelina Vega gets on the apron as Garza goes for his finisher.

The finish:

Ford slips out and tags in Dawkins. Cash Out and Ford off the top with an amazing For Splash onto Garza for the three count.

Winners & STILL WWE Raw Tag Team Champions, The Street Profits

After the match, Ford sits on the lap of Kevin Owens. KO announces tomorrow night on Raw, he’s bringing back The Kevin Owens Show and is inviting Aleister Black as his guest.

In the ring, Kayla is with Sasha Banks and Bayley. Bayley said nothing is going to ruin tonight for them. Kayla asks Banks if she expects Bayley to return the favor tonight. Banks says if Bayley can beat Asuka, she can beat Asuka. Banks laughs about taking out her best friend Kairi. Kayla can bank on Banks taking out Asuka. Bayley has a broom and says it’s going to be a clean sweep.

No Disqualification Match Where Loser Leaves WWE
– Mandy Rose vs. Sonya Deville

The start:

Sonya Deville immediately pins Mandy Rose. A counter with a right hand from Rose onto Deville and the fight goes to the outside.

Mid-match notes:

It gets physical early and often. Rose takes Sonya Deville down and the right up the ramp. Huge suplex from Mandy onto Deville. Mandy rams Deville’s head into the ring post. Mandy Rose is taking her time, her expression has not changed since the start of the match-up. Big right hand from Rose and throws her opponent into the barricade. Mandy taunts her opponent from the announce desk and lands a flying clothesline.

Right hands from Rose onto Sonya. Rose drags a table out from underneath the ring. Rose sets the table up but takes way too much time. Sonya has recovered and bangs her opponent’s head off the announce table. She rolls her back into the ring and gets a two count. Michael Cole reiterates the loser’s WWE career is over.

Deville hits Rose with a knee in the ring and gets another two count. Rose catches Deville’s kick and lands some left and rights. Deville kicks her off but Rose remains in control. Mandy goes for the running knee but Deville locks in a submission hold. The referee checks for submission. Sonya rakes at Mandy’s eyes.

Mandy hits a knee strike on her opponent and gets a near fall. Sonya Deville rolls to the outside. Rose throws Sonya around the outside. Rose sets Deville up on the table on the outside. She goes to the apron but Deville rolls off. Mandy gets a chair from underneath the ring and launches it. She does it again. Wow that would have hurt!

Sonya Deville eventually kicks Rose down on the outside. Deville rolls Rose into the ring and puts Mandy on her shoulders. Mandy counters and goes for a double under hook but Deville knees her and locks in a double underhook of her own. Mandy counters and hits a running knee of her opponent. She hits a second knee. A third! Rose connects with a double underhook face buster.

The finish:

She screams for Deville to get up and hits another running knee. She covers Deville for the pinfall victory.

WINNER, Mandy Rose. Per the stipulation, Sonya Deville must leave WWE

After the match, Deville is hysterical. Otis runs out with his Money in the Bank briefcase. He does the worm and grabs Rose in the middle of the ring. The celebration continues.

Street Fight
– Seth Rollins w/Murphy vs. Dominik Mysterio w/Rey Mysterio

The start:

The two lock up and Rollins takes Dominik to the mat. Rollins taunts Dominik who looks green as grass.

Mid-match notes:

Rollins throws his hair behind his ear and taunts Rey Mysterio on the outside. Dominik locks in a side headlock but Rollins shoves him off. Monday Night Messiah pose for the virtual fans. They lock-up, side headlock from Rollins. Still taunting Rey Mysterio on the outside.

Rollins with a wristlock on Dominik. Dominik counters with a couple of rights but immediately shut down. Dominik uses some lucha moves and hip tosses to counter. They sell it as the nerves are starting to settle for Mysterio. Rollins locks up with him and goes crazy with stomps. Scoop slam from Rollins onto his opponent. Rollins calls on Murphy to give him a kendo stick. Dominik counters with a dropkick.

Dominik has the kendo stick and runs around the outside after Rollins. Back in the ring and Rollins gets the kendo stick away from Mysterio. He whips him into the ropes and Dominik melts. Hard right hand from Rollins. He whips him into the turnbuckles and Dominik back down. Dominik is in desperate need of an opening. Release suplex from Rollins onto Mysterio. Rollins puts a submission hold on Mysterio in the center of the ring, the referee assesses the situation.

Rey Mysterio and Seth Rollins argue. Dominik counters but Rollins counters with a Sling Blade. The referee has a chat with Rollins. Rey’s wife looks on in terror from backstage. Murphy slides Rollins a chair. Seth taunts Rey and asks if this is too much for him. He has the chair setup and assaults Dominik with kicks and punches. Rey finally gets on the apron, he gets off as Rollins asks if he doesn’t want to help. Rollins goes for the Stomp but Dominik counters with a drop toe hold.

Dominik works Rollins over in the corner and isolates him with punches. Rollins ran for a powerbomb but Dominik countered with a hurricanrana. He followed with a DDT and covered Rollins for a two count. Both competitors are down as WWE turns up the mics of the virtual audience.

Dominik hits Rollins with a kendo stick right in the ribs. He follows it with a harder shot. He goes to town on his opponent. Dominik throws the kendo stick out and climbs to the top rope. Rollins stops him with a big punch. Rollins slaps Dominik around on the top rope. Dominik knocks him off but Rollins catches him with the Falcon Arrow and gets a two count.

Rollins looks out at Rey Mysterio. Rollins’ back is raw after multiple kendo stick shots. He has a kendo stick now and goes at Dominik. He taunts Rey in-between shots, asking if it’s enough or if he is going to save his son. Rollins barks at Rey to save his son. Rollins yells at Murphy to get a table. He screams, “It doesn’t seem to be enough Dom!”

Murphy slides a table into the ring. Rollins yells that Rey got his son into this mess. Rollins gets a kendo stick as the table is setup in the ring. He assaults Dominik with it. He sets him up on the top rope. Rollins tees off with the kendo stick and follows Dominik to the top rope. Rollins screams at Rey as he has his son on the top rope. Dominik counters while Rollins is talking trash. Back body drop from Dominik onto Rollins through the table.

Dominik climbs to the top rope and hits a Frog Splash! A tribute to Eddie Guerrero as he gets a three count. Rollins is infuriated as he recovers and hits a vicious powerbomb. Rollins rips the shirt off Dominik, exposing his skin for some kendo stick shots. He shots at Rey as he slams the kendo stick off the exposed skin of Dominik. All Rey can do is watch. Rey’s wife is terrified watching backstage.

Rollins has Murphy give him a pair of handcuffs. This is completely legal folks. Rollins puts half the handcuffs on the middle role. He drags Dominik over and taunts Rey on the outside. Angie, Rey’s wife, comes out. Rollins taunts her from the ring as Dominik rolls him up for a two count. Murphy in the ring, assaults Dominik.

Rey tries to convince his wife to stay away as Murphy tries to take out Dominik’s eye on the ring steps. Rey Mysterio finally jumps in. Now it’s a four-man brawl. Rollins throws Dominik into the barricade. Rollins and Murphy isolate Rey and take him out. They handcuff Rey Mysterio to the middle rope. Rollins grabs a kendo stick and Murphy grabs another one.

The crowd boos as Rey stands there helpless. Rollins looks at Angie at the top of the ramp. Rey tells Rollins to hit him. Murphy grabs Mysterio to make him watch. Dominik is back and takes them both out. He’s enraged as they were going after his mother. 619 on Rollins! Dominik goes to the top turnbuckle but he’s taking his time. He goes for the frog splash but Rollins gets his knees up.

The finish:

Rollins has a submission hold on Dominik as Rey tries to get involved still handcuffed. Rollins tells Rey to reach at his son. Rollins delivers the Stomp right in front of Rey Mysterio and pins him for the three count.

WWE Raw Women’s Championship Match
Sasha Banks (c) w/Bayley vs. Asuka

The start:

Sasha Banks goes right to the knee of Asuka, which Bayley worked hard earlier. Bayley looks on proud that Banks knew to go to it. Asuka sells she is on one leg but counters.

Mid-match notes:

Asuka connects on kicks to the mid-section of Banks. Sliding forearm from Asuka onto Banks. The fight is on the outside as Asuka locks in a submission hold. Banks gets into the ring and Asuka tosses her like a rag doll. Asuka covers Banks for a two count.

Banks performs a stellar powerbomb on Asuka to the outside of the ring. They’re both down for awhile but eventually get back in. Sasha has the momentum now and follows with kicks. She kicks Asuka right in the head but still kicks out of a cover. Banks sets Asuka up in the ropes. Asuka counters with Sasha on her shoulders and drops her face first on the mat. She locks in a submission lock, the referee checks.

Banks recovers but only to the point where Asuka is allowed to hit a DDT off the top rope onto her opponent. Banks goes to the outside to recover and the count out starts. Asuka comes out after her. She throws Banks into the barricade. Double count out starts as Banks rolls back inside. Asuka off the top rope with a missile dropkick into a two count. Banks counters and gets a near fall of her own.

Banks works over the Challenger in the center of the ring. Banks goes to the top rope and goes for a frog splash but nobody is home! Asuka applies in the Asuka Lock on Banks. Banks gets to a vertical base but Asuka wont release. In a counter, Sasha locks in the Banks Statement. The referee checks for submission.

The finish:

Banks finally fights her way out. Bayley on the apron, Asuka runs at her. Sasha lands offense but ends up right back in the Asuka lock. Banks taps out.

Winner & NEW WWE Raw Women’s Champion, Asuka

After the match, Bayley gets in the ring to check on Banks. Asuka hugs the belt in the background.

WWE Championship Match
– Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Randy Orton

In a pre-tape prior to the match, Shawn Michaels says he hopes Drew McIntyre gives Randy Orton a Claymore upside the head.

The start:

Drew McIntyre goes right after Randy Orton but he tells him to back off. Randy kicks the Champion in the midsection and slides right out of the ring. The virtual fans boo as McIntyre follows. Randy makes it clear he wants the pace of the match in his favor.

Mid-match notes:

Randy gets McIntyre back in the ring and goes for the RKO. He doesn’t get it but he tries again. McIntyre is frustrated and goes to the outside to regroup. McIntyre gets back in and backs Randy into the corner with big bombs. He goes for a Claymore and Randy attempts another RKO. He throws McIntyre back into the post and to the outside.

Randy throws McIntyre shoulder-first into the barricade. Face first off the announce desk and face first in to the post. Face-first into the announce desk again. And again as he drops the Champion on the announce desk. Randy quickly recognized and reacted to the vulnerability of the Champion. He slams McIntyre back into the announce desk. The double count out continues from the referee.

Snap suplex from Orton onto McIntyre. The count is six as Orton gets McIntyre back in for a quick cover. Headlock from Orton onto McIntyre, as he works to get out. Orton wrenches back on the headlock. Orton releases and stomps away on McIntyre. Orton buries a boot to the abdomen of McIntyre.

Randy kicks him in the face, as he aims to make McIntyre feel like he is out of his league. Orton pose and he gets heat from the virtual fans. McIntyre counters with shots to Orton’s midsection but Orton counters. They go back and forth but McIntyre hits a critical shot to the Challenger’s knee. An innovative knee breaker. Orton counters by working McIntyre’s knee. Randy grabs McIntyre by the hair and punches with his right hand.

Out of nowhere McIntyre, lands a spinebuster on Orton. McIntyre locks in the Figure Four leglock on Orton. Randy tries to fight it off but McIntyre locks it in. Randy sells as the referee checks on him. Orton is writhing in pain and even gets his shoulders on the mat for a count at one point. McIntyre punches Orton, he’s got a cut in-between his eyes. Orton rakes McIntyre right in the eyes to break the hold. The referee is showing a lot of leniency as Orton grabbed him so he did not see it.

McIntyre levels Orton with a chop to the chest. Both workers are down in the ring. McIntyre has visible damage to his left eye, some blood and all. They exchange blows with Randy landing a series of uppercuts. Both are on their feet now as they exchanges kicks and punches.

McIntyre hits a series of clotheslines as Randy attempted the RKO again. Overhead belly-to-belly. He launches Orton down. Drew McIntyre has come alive in this WWE Championship match! McIntyre climbs to the top turnbuckle. Flying clothesline from McIntyre onto Orton. They’re both down but McIntyre jumps up and taunts the camera. The Champion is owning the moment. McIntyre sends Orton’s head face-first off the turnbuckle. He follows with a chop and climbs up to the top. One shot and he locks in for a superplex but Orton uses headbutts to fight him off.

McIntyre falls to tree of woe position. Randy is busted open from his forehead. He’s on the top rope and thrown to the mat. McIntyre gets a near fall. Both men are now spent. McIntyre hits a future shock DDT and gets a two count. McIntyre puts Orton on his shoulders but Randy escapes.

McIntyre hits a big right and goes to the top rope. He goes off but nobody home. Orton with a big powerslam and a two count. Orton goes for a DDT but McIntyre fights him off and clotheslines the Challenger to the outside. The referee has gloves on since both are bleeding.

McIntyre back into the ring and the Apex Predator hits a huge DDT. The announcers question if that is enough to put the Champion away. Orton stands over McIntyre. He is looking for the punt kick. He goes for it but walks right into a powerbomb.

The finish:

McIntyre waits for Orton to get up and goes for the Claymore but Orton dodges it. McIntyre hits a backslide and pins Orton for the three count.

Winner & STILL WWE Champion, Drew McIntyre

After the match, McIntyre says this isn’t yours and it isn’t mine, it’s everybody’s!

Falls Count Anywhere Match for the WWE Universal Championship
– Braun Strowman (c) vs. “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt

Roll the Firefly FunHouse graphic that aired prior to The Fiend’s entrance.

The start:

Braun Strowman goes right at The Fiend but he laughs hysterically. He backs his opponent down and hits a Rock Bottom. He locks in a head lock, with Michael Cole teasing he is trying to rip his head off.

Mid-match notes:

Strowman on the outside, here comes The Fiend. He looks under the ring and grabs a toolbox. He rams it right to the gut of Strowman and hits him in the spine with it. He laughs sadistically. The toolbox is opened up as The Fiend clears off the announce team. Strowman fights back with right hands and a headbutt. He plows right through Wyatt and the barricade. Wyatt right back up with right hands, Strowman chokeslams Wyatt on the announce deck. The table buckles. Strowman is living up to his promise to bring hell to WWE.

Strowman kicks The Fiend to the midsection but Wyatt fights back. Strowman picks up the ring steps and hits him with them. Finally, The Fiend is on the ground. Strowman rolls him back into the ring. Cole reminds us that falls count anywhere. Strowman connects on a splash in the corner. He hits a running powerslam and gets a nearfall.

Strowman questions what he has to do, with a look of disbelief on his face. Strowman throws Wyatt face first into the barricade. He continues to assault The Fiend up the ramp. Strowman bangs Wyatt’s head off the screen. They go to the backstage area. Wyatt throws Strowman into the walls coast to coast. Wyatt connects on Sister Abigail. The Monster kicks out at two.

Wyatt gauges at Strowman’s eyes. They come back down the entrance way with Wyatt throwing Strowman off the screen so hard it goes black. Wyatt connects on a kick as Corey Graves says this is unfamiliar territory even for Strowman. Strowman is bleeding from his bald head. He sells hard on the outside. Wyatt stalks his opponent and goes for the Mandible Claw. Strowman tries to block it and gets to his feet. He pushes Wyatt into the side of the ring.

The Champion clubs The Fiend across the chest and covers him on the outside for a near fall. Strowman rolls Wyatt back into the ring. He lifts him up as he goes for a second running powerslam, he connects and gets a two count. Strowman follows with hammer fists to the face of the Challenger. Strowman gets out of the ring and grabs a box cutter. He gets into the ring with it and exposes the blade.

Strowman is slicing up the mat! He pulls back the canvas, exposing the wood inside the ring. I’ve never seen anything like this as he’s literally deconstructing the WWE ring.

The finish:

The Fiend recovers and hits a Rock Bottom and hits a Sister Abigail. He hits another face-first one on the exposed wood. He covers Strowman for the pinfall victory.

Winner & NEW WWE Universal Champion, “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt

Roman Reigns makes a shocking return and beats up on the new WWE Universal Champion after hitting a spear. Reigns gets out of the ring and spears Strowman. Reigns furiously yells at Strowman. He grabs a chair from the timekeeper’s table and assaults Strowman.

Roman is going to town with the chair on the fallen body of Braun Strowman. Reigns gets back in the ring with The Fiend down in the ring. Another huge spear on Wyatt, taking him back down to the mat. An emphatic statement by The Big Dog Roman Reigns. Reigns picks up the Universal Championship title belt and says it’s always been mine. He lifts it up as the show fades.
