Management of Anthem Entertainment, the parent company of Impact Wrestling, approached New Japan Pro Wrestling about a working relationship between the promotions. NJPW turned them down and AXS TV pulled their programming from their network.
Now that the AEW World Championship is being acknowledged by New Japan, the speculation is that there could be a working relationship developing between the two promotions. If Chris Jericho loses to Hiroshi Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 14, it will be an even bigger sign the companies plan on working together in the future.
