John Cena continues to enjoy success as an actor after years as WWE’s top superstar. During a recent interview to promote his “Playing With Fire” film, Cena explained that he became a star in WWE and because of that, he hopes people always remember him as a member of the WWE family.
“I hope they always view me as a member of the WWE, because I am,” Cena told the Belfast Telegraph. “Whether it’s watching the events or being able to participate, any chance I’m given to answer this question, WWE is my family. It’s weird that the culture is, you either do this or you do that, and for 20 years I’ve been trying to tell people, ‘No, it’s all really cool.’”
He continued that he always wants to be known as a WWE superstar.
“So I don’t ever want to not be known as a WWE superstar,” he said. “I can’t perform as much as the current ones, because I’m a little bit older, and I have these cool opportunities to do other stuff, but in doing other stuff, I’m not saying that world is shut off. I’m trying to bring this world with me, so we can all be involved in a movie conversation, or a WrestleMania conversation.”
While Cena always wants to be known as a WWE superstar, he is all but retired from in-ring action. He worked some live events for the company in 2019 and did some matches on a couple episodes of RAW but did not work any of their pay-per-views. He hasn’t had a WWE pay-per-view match since October 2018.
Cena’s on record as to saying he’s not shutting the door on wrestling again but it would only be on a limited basis because his body can no longer handle multiple matches per year. This in addition to his very busy movie filming schedule and other television and promotional commitments.
There have been rumors about Cena doing something big at Wrestlemania 36 this year in Tampa, where he currently lives, but it’s unknown at this point if it will be a match. WWE will begin the build towards their biggest show of the year at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view later this month so if Cena is going to work the show, he’ll likely have to be reintroduced to TV in the coming months.
It was rumored Cena would face Lars Sullivan at Wrestlemania 35 last year but plans were nixed when Sullivan had an anxiety attack the night he was scheduled to start the program in January. Cena ended up appearing on the show by bringing back the Dr. of Thuganomics in a segment with Elias but he did not wrestle.
