CM Punk And John Cena Reflect On Match That Changed Everything

It has been nine years since CM Punk defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank 2011 in one of the greatest matches in company history.

The match solidified Punk as a top star in front of 14,815 fans in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. Punk and Cena recently commented on the match on Twitter.

“I did a thing nine years ago,” tweeted Punk. “Couldn’t have done it without @JohnCena, @WWEArmstrong and most importantly the fans. That crowd, that atmosphere is something I’ll never forget. Thank you all. #MITB”

Cena responded:

“I bet on myself that night, the usual amount. Not a smart wager choosing the guy who can’t wrestle over the best in the world, but I’d like to think we all won that night. Thank you for allowing me to be part of something so many were entertained by.”

The original exchange is below:

The match saw Punk hit a GTS on Cena and pinned him to win the title. Vince McMahon ordered Alberto Del Rio out to “cash in” his Money in the Bank briefcase. Punk fought him off with a roundhouse kick. Afterwards, Punk blew a diss to McMahon and walked out as WWE Champion.
