On last week’s episode of NXT, Kyle O’Reilly won the Gauntlet Eliminator match. He received an NXT Title shot at NXT TakeOver as a result, much to the surprise of many fans. He has primarily been a tag team competitor. His last match as a singles competitor was at a Progress show in 2018.
Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and a recent outbreak in NXT, WWE had to change plans and this included the title picture.
During a teleconference to hype NXT TakeOver: 31, Triple H talked about Kyle O’Reilly receiving the title shot. He revealed that the company planned on giving O’Reilly a push for a long time.
It “may have” been done earlier than planned due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Triple H certainly implied that. He then praised O’Reilly for his in-ring prowess.
